IRP Lab (Innovation & Rapid Prototyping Lab) is a hands-on innovation and digital fabrication space at Param Foundation, Bengaluru, built to help people move from an idea to something they can actually see, hold, test and improve.
The lab brings together 3D printing, resin printing, laser cutting, electronics prototyping, mechanical fabrication and a range of hand and power tools under one roof. It is used to build prototypes, experimental mechanisms, functional parts, models, exhibits and proof-of-concepts, while also providing a space for people to learn by making.
A major focus of IRP Lab is reducing the gap between an idea and its first working prototype. Instead of spending weeks figuring out how something could be built, innovators can experiment with different materials, mechanisms and fabrication methods, quickly produce a physical version and iterate based on what they learn. The lab supports projects from early sketches and simple models through to functional prototypes and exhibit-ready builds.
The lab currently has a range of FDM 3D printers suited for different applications, including high-speed prototyping, large-format printing and engineering materials, along with resin 3D printing for detailed components. Its fabrication capabilities also include CO₂ laser cutting, electronics assembly and prototyping, PCB repair and testing, mechanical assembly, silicone mould making and finishing processes.
IRP Lab works closely with curators, artists, educators, innovators and project teams, helping them turn concepts into physical experiences. Projects can range from interactive exhibits and kinetic mechanisms to educational models, engineering prototypes, artistic installations and custom components that are difficult to source commercially.
Beyond project support, IRP Lab aims to build a culture of making. The space encourages experimentation, learning and sharing, allowing people to understand not just how to use a machine, but how different technologies and processes can be combined to solve a problem. Workshops, open making sessions and community-oriented activities are being developed to make these capabilities accessible to a wider group of makers, students and innovators.
The lab is part of Param Foundation's larger vision of making science and technology a part of everyday life. IRP Lab contributes to this by providing the infrastructure, tools and practical support needed to turn curiosity into experimentation and experimentation into innovation.
The long-term vision is to develop IRP Lab into a connected innovation and fabrication hub where people can come with problems, ideas or experiments and find the tools, knowledge and collaborators needed to build them. The goal is not simply to provide machines or 3D printing as a service, but to create an environment where people can learn, build, fail, iterate and ultimately make things that would otherwise remain only ideas.
