The STEM Innovation Lab at Thong Nhat A High School is a modern learning and practice environment designed to bring Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics closer to students through hands-on exploration, experimentation, design, and creative problem-solving. Developed as part of the STEM Innovation Petrovietnam program, the Lab provides students with opportunities to move beyond traditional classroom learning and apply academic knowledge to practical projects, technological systems, and real-world challenges.
Modern Facilities and Technology
The Lab is organized as a flexible, activity-based learning space where students can work individually and in teams at different specialized learning stations. Its facilities and equipment support a broad range of STEM activities, from artificial intelligence and robotics to environmental science, digital manufacturing, IoT, and scientific observation.
One of the key learning areas focuses on Artificial Intelligence and computer vision. Students can develop projects using AI cameras, including an automated attendance system in which cameras are programmed to recognize students and support attendance management. Through this activity, students gain practical exposure to AI applications while learning how technology can be used to solve everyday problems in a school environment.
Robotics and programming are another major component of the Lab. Students work with VEX IQ robots, where they learn to design, control, and operate robots to complete specific challenges and competition-based tasks. These activities encourage students to apply concepts from mathematics, physics, engineering, and technology while developing strategic thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
The Lab also provides opportunities for students to program VEX AIM robotic systems, using sensors and coding to enable robots to perform automated tasks. Through these projects, students learn about algorithms, logical thinking, sensor-based control, and the relationship between software instructions and physical robotic behavior.
Environmental science and data analysis are introduced through the Lark Weather Station. Students can collect real-world environmental data such as temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed, and wind direction. They then analyze changes in these measurements over time and use the results to better understand weather and environmental phenomena. This creates a direct connection between scientific theory, programming, data collection, and real-world observation.
The Lab also introduces students to the Internet of Things (IoT) through activities using devices such as micro:bit. Students learn how devices can connect to the Internet, collect and transmit data, monitor environmental conditions, create alerts, and control smart systems. These activities help students understand how connected technologies operate in modern life while building programming and systems-thinking skills.
For engineering design and digital fabrication, students have access to 3D printing and CNC technology. With 3D printers, students can transform computer-based designs into physical objects by building models layer by layer. This allows them to experience the complete process from an initial idea and digital design to a tangible prototype. CNC equipment further introduces students to automated and precise manufacturing processes, helping them understand how digital designs can be translated into accurately fabricated products and components.
Scientific investigation is also supported through microscopy activities. Students can use microscopes together with computer software to observe specimens, capture images, analyze findings, and store research results. This combination of scientific instruments and digital technology makes observation more visual, measurable, and engaging.
The overall Lab environment is arranged around themed learning areas and practical workstations. Supporting infrastructure includes appropriate learning tables, demonstration models, storage areas, an interactive display, whiteboard facilities, Internet connectivity, electrical systems, lighting, and designated safety facilities such as a first-aid kit and fire-safety area. The space is designed not only to accommodate equipment but also to enable students to move naturally between discussion, experimentation, construction, programming, testing, and presentation.
Educational Orientation
The STEM Innovation Lab is oriented toward student-centered, hands-on and project-based learning. Rather than learning scientific and technological concepts only through textbooks, students are encouraged to explore how those concepts work through experiments, prototypes, robotics, programming, data analysis, and engineering challenges.
The Lab promotes an interdisciplinary approach in which knowledge from different subjects is connected. Mathematics and physics can be applied to robotics; computer science can be integrated with AI and IoT; environmental science can be combined with programming and data analysis; and engineering principles can be explored through 3D printing and CNC fabrication.
This approach helps students understand that real-world problems rarely belong to a single academic subject. To develop a successful project, students may need to observe a problem, collect information, generate ideas, design a solution, write code, build or manufacture a prototype, test its performance, identify weaknesses, improve the design, and communicate their results.
The Lab therefore places strong emphasis on learning by doing. Students are encouraged to ask questions, experiment, make mistakes, revise their ideas, and develop solutions through an iterative process. Teachers serve not only as instructors but also as facilitators who guide students through investigation, experimentation, and project development.
Goals of the Lab
The primary goal of the STEM Innovation Lab is to contribute to improving the quality of science and technology education while developing students' creativity, technical thinking, and problem-solving.
More specifically, the Lab aims to help students:
• develop scientific curiosity and a willingness to explore;
• strengthen logical, computational, and engineering thinking;
• build practical programming and technology skills;
• apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations;
• develop creativity through designing, building, testing, and improving solutions;
• improve their ability to collect, interpret, and analyze data;
• strengthen teamwork, communication, and strategic thinking;
• become more confident in using modern scientific and technological equipment;
• gain early exposure to emerging fields such as AI, robotics, IoT, digital manufacturing, and data-driven science; and
• build a strong foundation for future learning, research, innovation, and technology-related careers.
Ultimately, the STEM Innovation Lab is intended to be more than a room equipped with advanced technology. It is an innovation-oriented learning environment where students can transform knowledge into action and ideas into real products, models, experiments, and solutions.
By giving students opportunities to explore, investigate, program, design, manufacture, test, analyze, and create, the Lab supports the development of the skills and mindset needed for future study and for an increasingly science- and technology-driven world.
