FabLab Farol da Criatividade (Lighthouse of Creativity) is a special team dedicated to creating educational solutions, especially modern board games and literacy support kits, both featuring integrated original stories. To achieve this, FabLab Farol da Criatividade hosts the Maker School Cooperative, also named Farol da Criatividade.
School cannot be disconnected from its reality. Our school looks at the potential of the city of São Leopoldo, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, extreme south of Brazil, which has its economic base in industry, technology, and innovation—a vision that the City Hall of São Leopoldo [https://www.saoleopoldo.rs.gov.br] actively believes in and supports. We strongly believe that prosperous citizens make a prosperous city, and this sustainability and prosperity come through knowledge and education.
To drive this transformation, we partner with Sicredi Pioneira [https://sicredipioneira.com.br], through its Social Fund, which invests in expanding the FabLab and offers ongoing mentorship for the Maker School Cooperative. Additionally, we receive valuable support from the international program Nestlé for Healthier Kids [https://www.nestle.com/nutrition/healthy-kids].
To demonstrate the power of this vision, students working in the Maker School Cooperative FabLab at Dr. Paulo da Silva Couto Municipal Elementary School (EMEB) are presenting 3 lines of educational solutions:
AlfaMundos and NumeraMundos develops highly personalized educational kits, combining tactile pieces with self-authored illustrated storybooks. Letter and number fitting within engaging narratives drive inclusive and playful learning.
Voando Alto com a Matemática e a Língua Portuguesa (Flying High with Math and Portuguese Language) redefines the teaching of mental calculation by transforming the feared abstraction of numbers into a game of pure strategy and engagement, through an unprecedented partnership with the Brazilian Air Force.
Fortalezas Mágicas (Magical Fortresses) is a modern board game created and expanded through a series of highly practical, transdisciplinary activities (both in-classroom and extracurricular) that take place during Language and Literature classes and in the Maker School Cooperative FabLab. Fortalezas Mágicas offers students a rich and fun experience of growth and learning. In this series of activities, using 3D printing (filament and resin), digital illustration, robotics, and generative AI, every game element is built by the students. The game universe is enriched by a series of literary narratives written by the students. These narratives not only contextualize the world of Fortalezas Mágicas and explain the rules and mechanics of the game, but also stimulate imagination and interest in literature, fostering a love for reading and story creation. Built with 3D printing, the game is organized into castles, villages, or ships with multiple levels and modular structures, simulating a city that requires resource management such as energy, food, transportation, and housing—e.g., windmills and waterwheels represent energy sources, while gardens, orchards, and livestock symbolize food production. Players are challenged to manage these resources efficiently and establish trade relations between the Magical Fortresses. The game stands out for involving a large number of players, allowing entire classes or even groups from different grades to participate simultaneously. With gameplay focused on collaboration, the game minimizes conflict between participants, emphasizing collective strategy and smart decision-making.
We believe that the "learning by doing" philosophy is essential for 21st-century skills. Our activities are deeply committed to the 2030 Agenda, focusing on:
SDG 4 (Quality Education): Enhancing STEAM education for students and teachers.
SDG 8 - Decent work and economic growth - Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.
SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure): Providing a space for local prototyping and social innovation.
SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities): Offering free access to technology for the community.
FabLab Farol da Criatividade, together with Sala Criativa [https://www.fablabs.io/labs/salacriativa], the division dedicated to robotics, laser cutting and engraving, and social media, present themselves as the school's educational innovation ecosystem.
